Chocolate Caramel Nut Bars

My mother has made these amazing bars ever since I can remember for the holidays.  They have become my favorite cookie ever, and when I moved out on my own I took over making them for our family cookie swap.  They are a hit no matter the time of year.  I hope you enjoy! -MaryKate

1 package Kraft individually wrapped caramels
2/3 cup evaporated milk
1 package German chocolate cake mix with pudding in the mix
1/2 cup butter, melted
Walnuts, chopped
Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  1. In a microwave safe bowl, place unwrapped caramels and 1/3c of evaporated milk. Set aside
  2. In a bowl mix together german chocolate cake mix w/ pudding, melted butter and remaining 1/3c evaporated milk. Press half the mixture into a greased 13 x 9-inch baking pan.
  3. Bake at 350°F for 6 minutes.
  4. While the crust is baking, microwave the caramels and evaporated milk in 1 minute increments, stirring after each minute, until the caramels have melted.
  5. After the crust has baked for 6 minutes, remove from oven and allow to sit for a few seconds to a minute.
  6. Pour the caramel mixture onto the crust and spread evenly to cover.
  7. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts and chocolate chips.  Add as much or as little as you want.
  8. Take small pieces of the remaining dough mixture, pat flat with your hands, and then place on top of the nuts and chocolate chips.
  9. Bake an additional 15-18 minutes. Cool. Cut into bars.

Enjoy!
