Sweet Snowballs

  • 2 sticks (1 cup) butter, softened
  • 1/2 c powdered sugar, plus another 1/2 cup for “snow”
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground anise (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  1. Heat oven to 350.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar in the mixing bowl until fluffy.  Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined.  Add the flour salt and anise and beat until you have dough.   If you’re using nuts, mix them in now, until they’re evenly distributed.
  3. Use your clean hands to roll small spoonfuls of dough into balls.   Place them on the baking sheet.   The cookies spread out in the oven, so make the balls tinier than you want the finished cookies to be.
  4. Bake 20 to 25 minutes (less for really tiny cookies) until slightly brown at the edges and dry on top.
  5. Put about 1/2 cup of powdered sugar in the paper bag. Transfer the warm cookies to the bag and shake it up.
  6. Be gentle!  The goal is to have sugar coated cookies not sugar mixed with crumbs. :)
